Daily Thought 4 - Life is not a Movie

This isn’t really a newfangled concept, but it merits saying as a reminder and justifying so you can’t shrug it off, life is not like the movies.  You see, in movies, you have this useful tool called the “jump cut”.  This is how a series of events which span over weeks, or even just hours, in the movie’s world only take 90 minutes in ours.  Books do this too, but they have the advantage of being much longer form content and can fit in more of the minutia of day to day dialog.  Have you ever noticed how the movie version of a book never seems to do the latter justice?  There are always missing pieces, dialog cut out for the sake of timing and scenes modified to appease the visual audience.  This is the same as when you try to compare life with a movie.  The awkwardness on a date, the hours of struggle through school or work, the silly  conversations of little consequence, and the efforts leading to resounding success or spectacular failure are often over dramaticized, shortened, or skipped entirely.  Just as a movie fails to do a good book justice, it even more so underrepresents the boredom and splendor of life.
